The Joe Brady era for the Bills is officially underway, and one of the first major personnel moves was a blockbuster.

Buffalo traded for wide receiver DJ Moore. And according to Brady, the move isn't just about filling a need; it's about reuniting with a player whom he has a “clear vision” to unleash within Buffalo’s offense.

Seven consecutive playoff appearances without a Super Bowl made change inevitable in Buffalo. Elevating Brady to head coach was one of the first big ones, and the acquisition of Moore was another. The Bills sent a 2026 second-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for Moore and a 2026 fifth-rounder.

Speaking from the NFL league meetings, Brady made it clear the player he saw on tape in 2025 wasn’t a diminished version of the star he once coached. "That wasn't any different than the guy that I'd coached," Brady said. His plan? "Get the ball in his hands."

It's a calculated move to address a glaring area of need at a reasonable cap hit.

Josh Allen will again finally have a true WR1, something the team hasn't had since trading Stefon Diggs two years ago. Moore’s career-low 2025 season with the Bears (50 catches, 682 yards) would have ranked second on the Bills in receiving yards, and his six touchdowns would have led the team.

For Brady, this is a reunion that makes sense. He served as Moore's offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers from 2020 to 2021, a stretch where the receiver was at his most productive. During those two seasons, Moore had a combined 159 receptions for over 1,100 yards each year. His career-best 18.1 yards-per-catch season came under Brady’s leadership.

Moore fits as a true boundary X-receiver, a vital component Buffalo has been missing. His skill set directly complements the Bills’ established weapons. While Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir have excelled at attacking the middle of the field, Moore provides the outside threat that a Joe Brady offense requires. His outside presence will force defenses to play honestly and keep them from limiting Buffalo’s interior threats.

Brady stressed that Moore will keep defenses from "focusing on one particular person," which should create more favorable matchups for everyone else on the field.

"It was important to get a skill set like DJ, a guy that can stretch it, can win one-on-one, can get the ball in his hands, and he can win on a slant," Brady added. "Adding DJ to it should only make Josh's life a lot easier and make Khalil Shakir's life a lot easier."

The move also takes significant pressure off younger receivers like Keon Coleman and provides a weapon for Josh Allen. Brady noted Allen is "built different" and has already been putting in work with Mooret. "I know him and Josh, there's been a lot of work this offseason getting them on the same page."

The new Buffalo receiver has the support of his former head coach as well.

“Great, great teammate. He was an integral part of our receiver room," said Bears HC Ben Johnson, about Moore. "I loved how he took coaching. I know he's got a history with Joe (Brady), and he's really looking forward to being with Josh Allen, as well. He's a guy that, personally, I'm going to miss because I viewed him as one of the guys that helped champion the message that we had year one here in Chicago. So it was an emotional day for me when we did trade him. And yet I feel really good about the situation that he's going to.”

This trade is a low-risk, high-reward swing that signals a clear offensive philosophy under Brady. Coupled with the defensive signing of Bradley Chubb and other roster moves, the front office is aggressively retooling to maximize Josh Allen’s championship window.

Brady’s vision is to create a multi-layered, dynamic attack that's harder to defend in January. Bringing in a proven playmaker he knows how to utilize is a massive step in that direction.

"He's dynamic, and he's going to make our team a lot better," the head coach concluded.
