Shohei Ohtani's stardom has only grown in the World Baseball Classic.

Three years ago, Ohtani's ninth-inning strikeout of Mike Trout became his first signature moment, as he clinched the WBC title for Japan. Since then, Ohtani signed a record-setting contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, won three consecutive MVP awards and set several records during his time in Major League Baseball.

Ohtani's WBC success has continued in 2026, as he has hit three home runs in the tournament thus far. The latest blast was a leadoff homer off Ranger Suarez that tied the quarterfinal against Venezuela and got Japan off to a strong start.

Here's a look at how Ohtani has fared in the WBC thus far.

Is Shohei Ohtani pitching in the WBC?

After pitching in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Ohtani chose not to pitch in the 2026 tournament to honor a deal he made with the Dodgers.

"As of now, playing as a pitcher in the WBC is not happening," Ohtani said, via MLB.com. "That is also a promise made with the [Dodgers], and there's a part of it that feels like it's about showing sincerity toward the organization that willingly sent me off. I think it's best to first contribute solidly on the offensive side."

Shohei Ohtani contract details

Ohtani is entering the third year of a 10-year, $700 million deal he signed with the Dodgers ahead of the 2024 season. While Ohtani's deal has since been surpassed by Juan Soto's 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets, the star two-way player still has the highest AAV in MLB history, not adjusted for deferrals.
