49ers could make Brandon Aiyuk and Commanders wait for a while

That's what Ben Standig told Kevin Sheehan on Friday on Sheehan's The Team 980 radio show. Standig conveyed how he spoke with Matt Barrows, who covers the 49ers with The Athletic. Standig said he sees it as virtually impossible that any other NFL team would give up a Day 3 draft selection only to have to take on Aiyuk's contract.

When asked if there were any updates regarding Aiyuk, Standig replied, "Beyond San Francisco being in no rush, there's literally no other buzz out there Standig was alluding to the fact that the 49ers are waiting to see if any team will give the 49ers a draft choice for the veteran receiver, Aiyuk. But seeing Aiyuk obviously did not keep his end of the contract, the 49ers are eliminating 2026 guarantees and waiting it out to see if any team bites.

"If he really wants to play with (Washington Commanders QB) Jayden Daniels that badly, it's just hard to imagine he would agree to go anywhere else, if he is going to take far less money," expressed Standig. "I don't know of any other scenario that anyone has talked about. Is it 100% certain he comes here? No, I mean, I haven't heard of any other scenario for a team out there."

Sheehan reminded his listeners, "It's unprecedented to walk away from $30-40M of contract money that was guaranteed that he could have easily gotten for minimal effort, even if he stayed hurt. The fact that he walked away from that by going AWOL, by not submitting to whatever medical they needed, twice a month. Then he didn't even fight it and the NFLPA hasn't even fought the voided guarantees, is unprecedented."

Sheehan stressed that unfortunately the 49ers do not owe Aiyuk anything until a roster bonus, which is due September 1. "So, if they're playing the petty, vindictive route the whole way, they don't have to do anything until August 31."

This would mean the Commanders, if that scenario plays out, would not have Aiyuk for the OTAs, the minicamp, nor training camp. The Commanders could avoid such a late start by offering the 49ers a seventh-round pick early enough to get him attending these workouts. But that means the Commanders would be taking on Aiyuk's contract...
