Honestly, this was perhaps a while coming. The Bavarians went into the season notably weaker in the wing position, having let Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané leave in the summer. In turn, they promoted Lennart Karl and Wisdom Mike to the senior team. They were never expected to play crucial roles, though Karl caught fire and became Europe’s hottest sensation for a few months.

Wisdom Mike, however, has had a bit of a different campaign. Though it has been a campaign of many firsts (first appearance for the U-23s, Bundesliga and Champions League debut for senior team) his performances through the campaign have not backed up his elevated status at Bayern. He is still too raw of a talent to truly dominate games at U-19 or U-23 level, let alone justify a squad spot with the senior team.

But there is another winger at Bayern who perhaps can. Maycon Cardozo has had a sterling season, dominating games, scoring wonder goals, dispensing the Brazilian flair missed for so long at the FC Bayern Campus and even deputizing at right back. He is one of the many players that have made their debut under head coach Vincent Kompany this season, even reaching two appearances at the time of writing.

But apparently Cardozo will get even more opportunities to demonstrate his talent. After Wisdom Mike suffered an injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season (and perhaps even longer), his squad spot is open on the left. According to reporter Kerry Hau, as captured by @iMiaSanMia_GER, Cardozo will be the one to fill the vacancy:

Maycon Cardozo has currently taken over the squad spot of the injured Wisdom Mike as backup for Luis Díaz on the left wing. He could continue to get occasional playing time.

In general, the amount of injuries Bayern’s standout talents have suffered are quite frustrating and a terrible shame for them. It was nice to see 16-year-old talents Filip Pavić and Erblin Osmani recently make their senior team debuts, but rest assured those minutes would have gone to David Santos Daiber and Cassiano Kiala if the latter duo were fit. In Cardozo’s case, however, the 18-year-old is more ready than Pavić or Osmani and, if he continues his strong season, could be in line for a good amount of playing time. Especially if Kompany wishes to give star left winger Luis Díaz some more breaks during the business end of this season.
