Shrewsbury Town captain Will Boyle has insisted his side are not safe from relegation to the National League despite an 11-point buffer to the drop zone.

A run of six wins in seven under new boss Gavin Cowan had lifted the League Two strugglers clear of the relegation places.

But since then they have lost three straight games - all without scoring - capped by a 4-0 hammering at home to local rivals Crewe on Saturday which leaves them 19th.

"We have to acquit ourselves, me included, better than we did today because it's not done until it's mathematically done," Boyle told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"It's not done at all and we don't want to be relying on other people."

Boyle said it was important for everyone to be "self-critical" and accept the brickbats as well as the bouquets.

"We've had a lot of praise for the run we went on recently since the gaffer's come in, and we're alright taking the pats on the back, but now we have to take the criticism," he added.

"We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and be honest with ourselves. That wasn't good enough, ultimately."

On Saturday (15:00 GMT), Shrewsbury face an away match at Newport County who sit a point and a place above the relegation places.
