Green Point crackdown: Shacks opposite Cape Town Stadium demolished
· The South African

In 2024, the homeless community near the Green Point tennis courts – known as “Tent City” – were evicted. Now the Sheriff of the High Court has carried out an eviction at the informal settlement on Granger Bay Boulevard.
Earlier this month, The South African reported on evictions at the Bantry Bay caves, which sparked strong reactions from the Atlantic Seaboard community.

Green Point eviction ‘follows legal process’
The City said the eviction followed a lengthy engagement process with those living on the site. Officials had offered assistance and alternative accommodation options in the lead-up to the operation.
“This morning, the Sheriff of the Court carried out an eviction at the site on Granger Bay Boulevard,” said ward councillor Nicola Jowell.
According to Jowell, where offers of help are declined, the City is required to follow a legal route, resulting in a court-ordered eviction.
Some accept assistance, others weigh options
Residents were again offered support on the day of the eviction and earlier in the week. A small number accepted placement in Safe Spaces, while others said they may still consider it.
“These situations are always difficult,” Jowell said, adding that the operation was carried out “with dignity and care.”
The site is now being cleared and will be used temporarily for nearby construction work.
