Officers inspected five factories during the operation and found one business unlawfully employing workers who were in the country illegally.

Police conducted the operation on Wednesday alongside inspectors from the Department of Employment and Labour and immigration officials from the Department of Home Affairs.

Immigration officials confirm undocumented foreigners’ illegal status

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said immigration officials verified the status of the workers.

Home Affairs officials verified the individuals’ status and found that all 15 undocumented foreigners were in the country illegally, Netshiunda said. Police then arrested them.

Authorities also arrested the factory owner for violating immigration and labour laws.

Netshiunda said the operation was part of ongoing enforcement efforts. It targeted businesses that fail to comply with labour and immigration regulations.

More inspections planned

“The operation was a continuation of operations aimed at stamping the authority of the state,” he said.

“It ensures there is no lawlessness in the business sector that directly or indirectly compromises the livelihood of South Africans,” he added.

He added that authorities will continue conducting similar inspections across the province.
