· Yahoo Sports
In what many had begun calling the Royal Baseball Classic, the Kansas City Royals were once again well represented in Tuesday night’s World Baseball Classic championship game. Third baseman Maikel Garcia opened the scoring in this game with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, while former Royals reliever Angel Zerpa pitched a scoreless two outs in the seventh inning to get a hold.
Veteran Royals catcher Salvador Perez also factored into the win, picking up a hit and scoring a run.

To cap off what was a very impressive showing for Royals players throughout this tournament, Garcia was awarded the MVP award for his consistency throughout. Finishing the tournament with a .385 batting average and .970 OPS, Garcia was one of the most consistent players on both sides of the ball.
One of the game’s best defenders at the hot corner, Garcia showed off his offense as well during this tournament. His seven RBIs were tied for fifth in the WBC. He also scored five runs and stole three bases.

Garcia was just one of several Royals players who starred in the World Baseball Classic. Bobby Witt Jr. has been a leader for Team USA, while Vinnie Pasquantino and Jac Caglianone helped lead Italy to an improbable semifinals run.
Kansas City enters the 2026 MLB season with some heightened expectations. Finishing two games above .500 last season, the Royals were third in the American League Central, but neither the Detroit Tigers nor defending division champion Cleveland Guardians had the type of offseason that Kansas City did.
Detroit of course made the unexpected big splash to sign Framber Valdez, but the Royals made several moves to bolster both their lineup and pitching depth, which has them feeling optimistic about their chances in the Central this year.
With a top-five player in Witt, Kansas City recognizes this is a potential window to contend. Witt continued to showcase his greatness on the WBC stage, as did several of his Royals teammates for their respective countries.
The WBC championship game was going to produce a Royals champion one way or another, and it ultimately ended up being Garcia and Perez who won it all with Venezuela. This has been a fun spring for Kansas City, and those fans are hoping it will lead into a good summer and potentially even late fall baseball. With Opening Day just a week away, this was the perfect way to begin the baseball calendar.
