After receiving devastating news last week, UNC’s freshman forward Caleb Wilson earned first team All-ACC honors, and also made the ACC All-Rookie team. This news is coming off the heels of Wilson suffering a season-ending injury after breaking his right thumb.

Wilson averaged 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game this season, all while shooting at a 57.8% clip. He lead the Tar Heels in every category minus field goal percentage, which easily made him the most impactful player on the floor night in and night out. He was only 15 points behind Duke’s Cameron Boozer in All-ACC voting, and was tied with him in All-Rookie voting (not to be confused with Rookie of the Year voting, which Boozer won in a landslide).

Other Tar Heels who were recognized are Henri Veesaar and Seth Trimble. Veesaar earned second team All-ACC honors, while Trimble earned Honorable Mention. Veesaar is currently averaging 16.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. Wilson and Veesaar made for one of the most dangerous front court duos in college basketball this season. While there were a number of games where it felt like they were trading production with one another, the team was at their best when they were both firing on on cylinders. It’s upsetting to know that we will likely never see these two on the floor at the same time again, because the potential was there for them to be a lot of fun in the NCAA Tournament.

For Trimble, he is averaging 14 points and 2.6 assists per game. After missing a decent amount of time near the beginning of the season, the senior guard returned and is currently having his best season that he’s had in a Carolina blue uniform. He will have to be a big-time contributor in the ACC and NCAA Tournaments, especially since we know that guard play goes a long way in teams’ success down this stretch.
