Murray won an NCAA national championship at UND in 1982 and won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996.
He was inducted into UND's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
"Troy Murray was one of the all-time great players at UND," coach Dane Jackson said. "He will be remembered mostly for what a genuine and selfless teammate he was. Troy's humility and passion to help those around him was special. He was a high-character guy that was an ultimate competitor that did anything to win. He was a true leader that left an indelible mark on our program."
Murray played at UND for two seasons from 1980-82.
He scored 33 goals as a freshman, setting a school record that still stands today. As a sophomore, he reached the 100-career point mark in his 50th game. No UND player has joined the Century Club in fewer games.
Murray helped UND win the NCAA national championship that season. He assisted on a goal in the third period of UND's 5-2 win over Wisconsin.
He finished his college career with 80 games, 55 goals and 129 points.
Murray then embarked on a 15-year, 915-game NHL career. The majority of it was with the Chicago Blackhawks.
In 1985-86, he tallied 99 points and won the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward.
"Troy was the epitome of a Blackhawk, so far beyond his incredible playing career with a presence felt in every corner of our organization over the last 45 years," Chicago Blackhawks chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz said. "He was admired by his teammates and our players, and was so proud to connect generations of Blackhawks through his work with the Blackhawks Alumni Association. He jumped at every call to support our local community with our Foundation. He never missed a chance to say hello in our press box and always knew the perfect time for a joke just when someone around the office needed it most."
Murray wore the captain's 'C' for both the Chicago Blackhawks and the Winnipeg Jets.
He ranks 10th among former UND players in most NHL regular-season games played.
