Rams' Sean McVay named one of the best head coaching hires since 2000

Sean McVay's tenure with the Los Angeles Rams has been synonymous with success. Not only is he the winningest head coach in franchise history, but McVay has won 10 playoff games in nine seasons, been to two Super Bowls and won one of the them.

In a league where teams move on from coaches quickly, McVay found a method to hold on and excel at his position.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reviewed all 180 NFL head-coaching hires since 2000 to find the best decisions made by teams this century. He calculated the "average" head coach tenure based on six categories, and then awarded a point for each category a coach exceeded.

Here were the benchmarks a coach needed to clear to earn a point for each category:

  • 5 seasons as head coach
  • 35 regular-season wins plus a .500 win rate
  • 2 playoff appearances
  • 2 playoff wins
  • 1 Super Bowl win
  • 1 Super Bowl appearance

Unsurprisingly, McVay made the list of 13 coaches who earned a point in each category. He's heading into his 10th season as head coach of the Rams, has a 92-57 record, appeared in 16 playoff games, won 10 playoff games, won one Super Bowl and appeared in two. Apart from Super Bowls, McVay more than cleared the bar on every category.

Here were the other coaches who made the list:

  • New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick
  • Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden
  • New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin
  • Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy
  • New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton
  • Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin
  • Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh
  • Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll
  • Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid
  • Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson
  • Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni

Another Rams coach, Mike Martz, actually got pretty close. He cleared all but five categories: Martz coached for almost six full seasons, went 53-32, appeared in seven playoff games and won three, appeared in a Super Bowl, but didn't win it.
